Register or Transfer a Domain Name
A domain name is that part of a website address after the www, for example:
In this example the domain name is whcf.org.uk
The domain name is also the part of an email address after the @ sign, for example:
In this second example the domain name is whcf.com
Domain names are effectively leased and must be paid for by an annual fee. These are of the order of £ 3 per annum for a .co.uk or .org.uk domain and £ 9 per annum for a domain name ending .org or .com
A domain name is registered with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for a period of 1 or 2 years. The fees are paid by the ISP and re-charged to you, the Registrant.
Once you have "leased" the domain name you are free to use it to publish a website and to allocate email addresses to your staff. However, to practically do this requires the domain name to be "hosted" at your ISP so that server resources can be allocated to host the website and mail delivery. See the service Domain Name Hosting for more information.
If you ask the Telematics Centre to make a proposal for a domain name registration we will first clarify your requirements, including:
- whether any other domain names are currently registered
- whether you currently have a hosting arrangement with an ISP
- your preferred domain name suffix such as .org.uk
- your order of preference for the name from a list of suggestions.
Once these requirements have been clarified we will provide you with a written quotation (usually by email) covering the whole job. When we have received your approval we will then:
- check that the preferred domain name is still available;
- register the domain name with a suggested ISP using the contact details of your organisation;
- confirm that the domain name is registered and online;
- fully document the work in our detailed documentation on your computer installations.
As usual, we take care of all parts of process for you, leaving you to relax and enjoy your new domain name.
Cost: the Telematics charge for registering a new domain name is usually £ 60 plus incurred costs from the ISP.
