PowerLine networking

PowerLine networking is a relatively new technology which uses the mains electricity wiring in a building to transmit network data traffic.  It can often solve a difficult networking problem because of its characteristics:

It has advantages over wired Ethernet cabling:

  • because it uses existing installed cables; no need to run new cables
  • it can be faster than Fast Ethernet (which runs at 100 Mbps)
  • some devices come with built-in switches to connect more than one PC

It has advantages over wireless Ethernet technology:

  • easier to configure
  • it has much greater range, especially where there are thick or metal-clad walls
  • much more reliable
  • does not suffer from interference from other wireless networks nearby

PowerLine networking can fail to work where the electrical outlets to be used are on different circuits in a building and particularly on different phases of a 3 phase electricity supply.

If you ask the Telematics Centre to make a proposal for networking using PowerLine technology we will first clarify your requirements, including:

  • the locations to be connected
  • the electrical installation details
  • the number of computers or other devices to be connected at each location

Once these requirements have been clarified we will provide you with a written quotation (usually by email) covering the whole job.  When we have received your approval we will then:

  • supply and install suitable PowerLine network devices;
  • supply and install any additional Ethernet wired equipment;
  • test and demonstrate the resulting PowerLine computer network;
  • fully document the work in our detailed documentation on your computer installations.

As usual, we take care of all parts of process for you, leaving you to relax and enjoy your reliable network connection over mains wiring.

Cost:  the Telematics charge for setting up this technology depends on a range of factors and is therefore quoted on a per-job basis.  The hardware PowerLine connecting devices cost in the region of £ 125 for a pair (and will always require at least a pair of devices).
